We have had full-grown chickens for over 8 years now. We purchased them as 3 day old chicks and raised them into adult chickens. It’s always so exciting to pick them up and watch them grow. Last year I decided to incubate and hatch our own. I selected the type of breeds I wanted online, and the eggs were mailed to our nearby post office. It was super exciting to pick them up with Liam after his day at preschool. We carefully drove our package home and set each little egg into our rotating incubator. Reminiscing now about this wonderful event makes me want to do it all over again. Just like giving birth, I’ve forgotten how much work these little baby chicks are when they first hatch. I remember staying up super late to watch them hatch. They’d start off with a little tap and a crack, only for it to be like 2 or 3 hours later that they’d fully hatch! Then, I made sure they were fully dry and transferred them into a heated brooder. Making sure they were warm and eating and drinking and just plain happy. As much as it was very involved and hard work I would definitely do it all over again. Heres a glimpse into our magical experience.
